  • About Railway 200

Railway 200 is a nationwide celebration marking 200 years of the modern railway — commemorating the opening on 27 September 1825 of Stockton & Darlington Railway (S&DR), widely recognised as the birth of modern passenger rail travel.

Created by a broad coalition of rail-industry partners including Network Rail, the initiative celebrates rail’s heritage, impact and future. 2025’s programme is designed to honour what the railway has achieved over two centuries — and to inspire the next generation, with a specific focus on Skills & Education, Innovation & Environment, Heritage & Culture, and Celebrating Railway People.

Railway 200 combines nationwide events, community and heritage-railway activities, public exhibitions (including a touring exhibition train, Inspiration), and outreach aimed at engaging communities and young people — shining a light on the railway’s continued role in connecting places, people and opportunities across the UK.
